Artist Statement

Behind every face there is a story waiting to be told. That is the inspiration for my artwork. A recurring theme in my paintings – tenacity, persistence, spirituality – is a reflection of my cross-cultural identity. Having spent my formative years in India, my work is greatly influenced by its rich heritage. The American values that embrace individuality, diversity, and free-spirit play a considerable role in the choice of my subject matter.

Empowerment of women in society is a cause close to my heart. Growing up in a patriarchal society, I have witnessed and experienced the inequality faced by women. Over time I have realized that gender bias is pervasive and deeply rooted in all stratas of society, regardless of where you come from. I like to search for the dignity, grace and resilience in my women subjects. Their indomitable spirit is the inspiration for most of my work.

In my paintings, I weave stories with women as the central subject. They have a primal connection with life and nature. When people see my work, I want them to experience the lives of ordinary women from a different part of the world. By exposing the viewers to a reality which is very distinct from theirs, I want to pique their interest and create a dialogue between the different cultures. The very nature of the subject matter lends itself to the choice of vibrant colors that make my story-telling come alive. Once I have the viewers’ attention, they are then free to make their own personal connections and explore their emotional response to it.

When I am not creating art, I love to hike, explore nature, and backpack in the mountains. I am also deeply involved in a cause that reflects my belief of empowering the underprivileged through education. The act of painting takes me on an uplifting spiritual journey. I would like to take my viewers along with me.
